Moving On...

Hi,

This will be my last journal entry on this account. For those of you who are not yet aware, I now have a new account HERE

I have also just uploaded the last deviation I'll ever upload to this account too. So from now on, this account is dead.

If anyone is reading this, I'd really appreciate it if you could come Watch my new account, and maybe have a look at my gallery. There are some old shots you've seen before, but also an increasing number of new images that haven't been posted on this account.

In closing, thank-you to everyone who Fav'd / Watched / commented / gave advice, and I hope to see you all over at my new account!

Cheers,
Matt

Hello deviant-arters!

Hows it going? Hope everyone is well!?

Once again, its been ages since my last update, but I don't see the point in updating when I don't have anything to say. Although it might seem like I've been a bit quiet recently, I have been quite busy behind the scenes...

Bought a new camera the other day - and I absolutely love it! I'm so happy with it. Its a Nikon D80, which I got with a Sigma 18-125mm f/3.8-5.6 DC OS HSM. Although its technically only an incremental upgrade from my old camera (D60), it has a few features which are really useful to me - number one being the ability to use the on-camera flash as commander to fire my SB600 Flash. Together they're an awesome combination. Plus the image quality of the new lens far surpasses anything acheivable with my old kit lenses.

I got the camera off eBay - got an aweome deal on it, its second-hand, but pretty much brand new (less than 2000 shutter actuations! I had 13,000 on my old camera and I'd only had it 2 years). Unfortunately PayPal *completely* fucked me over, and took the money out of my account twice, so I went overdrawn, and then they did all sorts of mad shit to me and the guy I bought the camera from. Ended up with both me and the other guy phoning each other and PayPal for a few days trying to sort it out. Then, once everything was fine, they put a block on my account, which I was then unable to restore, so that took another week or so to fix. Absolute bastards. I've told this story to a few friends, and it seems that most people have had a run-in with PayPal at some point. Really pissed me off, but all sorted now.

Bought some new lighting equipment, which I haven't used on any shoots yet. I've had a go in my garden and I'm really looking forward to shooting with it.

Speaking of shoots, I have a Pin-Up themed shoot coming-up with Alice Cat, and I discovered an awesome Urbex-type location near Port Talbot the other day, so really looking forward to shooting there - just need to find the right model first.

The thing I'm most looking-forward to at the moment is an up-coming fetish-themed shoot in a studio in Birmingham, with three models and three different set-ups, so that should give me a variety of useful shots. Plus its an area of interest for me, as I haven't done anything quite like that yet.

Finally, my semi-long-term plan is to re-brand and re-launch under a new name within the next 6 months. I'm not giving-away any details yet, but I am organising my own website for the first time, going-through my portfolio, re-editting, and designing a logo / watermark. More details to follow in my next update.

Anyone who is interested in shooting / working with me then please feel free to send me a note, or email me or whatever. I'm always looking for models to work with TFP / TFCD - especially Alt. / Tattoo'd / Fetish etc - but I'll consider working with anyone!

As always, thanks for the watches / favs / comments / etc, I really do appreciate them.

Thanks for reading, see you all soon,

Cheers,
Matt

Ok, so on Setember 27th, I will have been on dA for a year...

I feel that I have generally been steadily improving for the last 12 months, but particularly within the last 2 or 3 months I've really stepped-it-up a gear with my photography, making a specific, conscious effort to become a better photographer. Whether or not anyone has noticed is another issue! Anyway, I have recently attended a photography / business seminar in Cardiff, and I'm attending 2 studio-lighting / glamour workshops and a Photoshop Seminar, all in October / November.

I'm starting to take my photography quite seriously now, and I'm really concentrating on technique, colours, composition and lighting. I'm trying to read as much theory as I can get my hands on, as I beleive that to be a truly great photographer you need to be intelligent, and learn to apply photographic theory to your images. Obviously, a little natural talent doesn't hurt, and I'd like to think I have a little bit of that too. I've also started looking-into doing photography  professionally at some point in the future, however, I know  that in order to be able to do this I need much more experience, and that all starts from now.

To coincide with this update, I've removed a lot of the really poor stuff from my gallery (don't worry - there's still TONS of crap stuff in there!) but in an attempt to really push myself forward, and appear a little more than an amateur with a hobby, I thought it would be more appropriate if I removed some of the images that I know are particularly bad (about half my gallery?).

As ever, CONSTRUCTIVE feedback is hugely appreciated, even if you don't like the shots themselves, I still love (and need) to hear criticisms / comments. If you're going to leave comments like "I like this", and "Nice colours", or "Cool shot!", then just do us both a favour, and stop wasting time with useless and pointless musings. I apologise if that comes across as a little abrasive or even big-headed, but thats how I feel, and I do feel quite strongly about it.

Also, I'm looking to do some TF* location shoots, so if you're a model (preferably tattoo'd / Alt. etc) and you fancy shooting in the South Wales area then please get in touch.

As always, thank-you so much for the views, favs, watches, and (useful) comments, and if anyone is reading this and would like to work together, please send me a note, or contact me via email, or just give me a ring (contact details are available on my dA Portfolio).

Thank-you,

    Matt.

I'm new

3 min read
.

I'm new.

New to photography.

New to Deviant Art.

First things first, I'm not gunna pretend that any of my shots are particularly interesting, or particularly well-shot, well-composed, well-editted etc, but I would like to think that some of them are not too bad for a beginner. I like them, and I'm hoping that a couple of other people might like them too. I know that most of the subject matter is incredibly boring, but at the moment I'm just taking pictures of whatever is around me and easily accessible. Also, I like to get my shots right in-camera as much as I can, so most of my images are pretty natural, and I try to only ever use a minimal amount of image editing - mostly Curves / Levels / Saturation, that sort of thing. Some of my earlier shots are in desperate need of a little editting, but I'll leave them as they are and just cconsider it to be part of the learning curve. The thing is, I'm as much of a novice at photoshop as I am at photography, so I'm trying to learn 2 things at once at the moment, and a lot of the time I'm just messing-around and experimenting.

Please feel free to comment as much as you like on any of my deviations - there are a LOT of AMAZING artists on here, so I'll take any advice that is offered - I need all the help I can get!

Above all - PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE criticise my deviations! To be completely honest, comments that say things like "I like this", or "Thats great" are nice to hear but are pretty useless. If you like something, please tell me what you like / why you like it. But even better, please tell me what you DON'T like / why you DON'T like it. Its more useful for me, and I appreciate it more.

Also, I really like the colour Blue, so you may well notice a bias towards this colour / theme in my gallery and in my Favourites.

PS - apparently, the way to become a popular photographer on dA is to have lots and lots of naked girlies in your gallery, even if the shots themselves are pretty poor. Unfortunatey, I do not have any naked girlies in my gallery, but please come have a look anyway...
